18 The Moon
As I look at the card I see the bats coming out of the card and associate these with transformation and initiation, the moon seems surrounded with pink and green cloud like lights which seem to fill the card with mystery and intrigue it seems very alluring. The snowdrops I have a personal meaning to of friendship, and of renewal and beginnings, a pure new start.

I walk into the card. ...
“Hello moth” I say as I see the moth in the top left hand corner. “Hello” he says “I live in the shadow and am drawn to the light – sometimes to my detriment, but it is the search for light in the darkness that I am about. This time of the moon is about the light within the dark – though you might be in a place of difficulty and darkness, there is always an element of the light to be found and if you can't find it in yourself, then go towards someone else's light and they will help you become illuminated yourself. My warning is that you must beware as you follow someone else's light you may have to face restriction and limitation else you be burnt in the flame. Though for some this 'burning', the pain of going to the light, is merely the letting go of one form of life to embrace another. To move on from the darkness consuming you, you have to be prepared to sacrifice the way of life you are used to, to embrace the rebirth into the new way of life that is in front of you. Daytime living needs different skills to living in the dark.”
“Wow thank you moth – you have shared much of yourself so easily and it is useful information – thank you for your teachings. ”
The moth appears to follow me into the card as I step further in. I look towards the snowdrops and see how beautiful and delicate they are. “What do you symbolise in this card?” I ask. “We are the representation of that new life that is possible – the first signs of new growth – before you move out of the path of this card you will see the sure signs of the new path you are to take. Though we do not last very long in our own lives we show the start of a very big change in yours. In the same way though often the initial glimpses of how your new life will be are short lived and things do change away from them with time, the first idea is the signpost of the way to go and indicates that you need to be prepared to let go of your current place in order to embrace the fullness of spring and the promise of the summer to come. There are many stages of life shown in this card and we are all part of a cycle of life, the moth represents the search and the fear of finding, we are the sign that the answer has been found, but possibly not taken yet, as you move through this card you will find other places on the journey, as, in many ways, we represent the full cycle of life and the cycle of all the tarot in a micro way. Thank you for asking us to share with you our knowing for we are short lived and feel we want to bring our message of hope to all who walk through the confusion and darkness of night, know the day is soon breaking and it can be a lasting time of joy when it comes. ”
“Thank you oh snowdrops, I love you for your beauty, hope and simplicity. It is like you ask nothing of us and you bring hope at the beginning of each new year.”
I then find myself drawn to look at the bats.
“We are the bats – those who show you your darkest places.... confront them and you will find you have great strength, as you learn to live with a new view on life and then fly silently into the world of darkness, you find you can overcome many things. As you love the night and the time where you have other senses to rely on, you grow in your abilities to sense in the day too. It is like there is power to be gained in staying with the darkness you discover in yourself, and with the darkness that sometimes overshadows your life. When you move forward despite this darkness, you find that you can sense more than you thought you could at first. We represent the 6th senses, intuition psychic abilities and the realms beyond that which is 'normally' perceived. We see the mysteries of the world, and can move silently because of our increased and different perception. Value your gifts and move in the daytime world – knowing you can see beyond, trust your senses and know that they can see obstacles before your physical eyes. Trust and believe. The fear associated with us is the fear of the unknown, of the dark, of not knowing the next step. Fear of being lost – not able to see the way forward. Know you can trust your other senses and walk forward with confidence the only obstacles are the ones you create for yourself.”
I thank the bats and go further forward into the card. I see the swirling green and pink clouds and see the moon surrounded with love energy, with a peacefulness that removes all fears. I feel I am going deep within the card as I approach the moon herself.
“Oh moon what wisdom do you have for me at this
time?”
“Know you are a reflection of the energy around you and know that
the energy around you reflects you back to yourself. See how you react
because of others and see how they react because of you. By looking at
the reflections of yourself that you attract to you in others, you can
find the pathway to love and light within yourself. As you see the
reflections of others in yourself you can also see how others are
themselves. Use this knowledge for love and you will find the path
easier. As you focus on the love in yourself and see the love in others,
the love increases. Like the moon, you reflect and are reflected. Our
light reflected back to us is what attracts us to someone, learn to love
yourself in this way. Accept what you find hard to accept in yourself
and find love where you see darkness. Also know that there is a time for
working with these principles and a time for retreat and rest, going
within alone so it is only you that you are with – know both of
cycles of life.
When I am full I am about socialising and learning through others, when I am new I am about being alone and seeing only my own energies. Know your own cyclic nature and work with it rather than against it and you will find peace along with your growth.
As you see, we all together here work to show how the cycle of exploring within, letting go, exploring without, embracing the new work. Each aspect has its time and place. When you draw this card – see the cycles at work – which phase you are in, know you are true to yourself when you follow your natural energy levels, also know there are times for understanding and seeing all, and times for trusting your other senses for your guidance and whilst unknowing in one way, you are made more knowing in another. We come together in this card to tell you that though you may not see the way forward take one step at a time and trust you are guided through this time. There is much you may not see, yet it may influence you. Hold to love and you will find this guides you to the best of all situations. Do not fear the dark for passage through it will set you free.”
“Thank you great moon. I feel your unity here each part seems to have its own message and each voice an aspect of your whole. How would you say a reversed aspect would be.?”
“For reversed cards see a resisting of the natural flow of events, finding it hard to trust that you know your own path at a deep level, searching for a guru perhaps, when the answers are within you so possibly getting you 'burnt'. Yet sometimes these over-searching times are needed to show you the best way to let go of your desire to see the light outside of yourself. Reversed too it could mean someone you held in high esteem has fallen off their pedestal and though you may feel let down, it is a gift from high, as you see the fullness of the picture and how you went forward like a moth to the flame without drawing back to your own light. It is also showing the fear of the dark – not wanting to accept that a darkness is with you, as there is within all, you turn all the lights on around you, pulling others to you to make you better, when it is in you that you need to look. You possibly are also blaming others for situations of your own. Reversed you feel you can't get through this, you feel trapped, you feel powerless.
In these situations look to the moon – know that you have an immense power in yourself – even when you are new and not reflecting other light, your power is still there – the tides still move in and out, you are able to face and know your own emotions even when they seem hidden or too big to deal with. Know you have the power within to conquer anything, and you will righten the card and move forward in your life.”
“Thank you moon, bats and all here. I bow in reverence to you and I leave with more knowing. I feel the mysterious nature of this card as I communicate with you, I feel both comfortable and uncomfortable as I am here. I feel in this discomfort you are showing me your meaning in experience as well as words and I thank you for your lessons.”
I turn and leave and feel somewhat uneasy as I wonder what was me and what was not and notice, as I say this, that this is one of the challenges of the card. What is ourselves and what is the reflection of another. Both as we study ourselves and as we study others.
I ask for a dream to come with this card as I leave.... I feel dreams are the realm of the moon and perhaps will help me express this card more fully to me personally now.
A few days later I reread this and truly understand my confusion and discomfort was indeed part of the cards energy as I look over what I have written it now makes sense and is clear. It shows me the power of walking within these cards and how when in them my judgment of what I am seeing is often coloured by the nature of the card itself.
